Building a Shop: Episode 1
As a long-time DIY enthusiast and aspiring entrepreneur, I've been dreaming of building a spacious, functional shop on my property. After careful planning and preparation, I'm excited to share the details of my latest project – the construction of a brand-new post frame shop.
The Specifications and Design Choices
The new post frame shop will measure 30 feet wide by 64 feet long, with a concrete floor that is 4 inches thick. The interior ceiling height will be a generous 12 feet, providing ample space for a variety of projects and potential future business endeavors. To create a cohesive, farmhouse-inspired aesthetic, I've opted for white metal siding and a black metal roof.
One of the key design decisions was the use of laminated columns instead of traditional 6x6 beams. This choice offers several benefits, including straighter construction and a built-in notch that simplifies the installation of the trusses. Additionally, the columns will be secured to concrete pylons rather than being buried directly in the ground, which is a common and recommended approach for post frame buildings.
The building will feature a 16x10 foot garage door, allowing easy access for large items or equipment. To ensure proper ventilation, I've chosen to incorporate premium vented closure pieces on the roof and soffit, along with house wrap on the walls and roof.
